Superstitions About Amphibians

We all know that if you kiss a frog
you'll turn him into a handsome prince, but did you know that if you're
not looking for a new man then you can always use the frog to cure
warts or predict the weather. In here you can find many more traditions
associated with reptiles and amphibians of the British Isles.

Adder

The
adder is an omen of good luck and it used to be believed that you could
defeat your enemies if you killed an adder. Many people also believe
that if you find an adder outside your house it was a sign that someone
you know would soon die.

To see an adder in early spring was a sign that you would defeat your enemies and win all your battles for the remaining year.

Toads

Burglars believed that they would never get caught as long as they carried a toad in their pocket.
On a new moon, toads can be turned into witches.
If a toad crosses the path of a bride and groom on their wedding day, they are said to enjoy happiness forever.
By carrying a toad bone in their pocket, a horseman could gain better control of their mount.

Frogs

Frogs can predict the weather - "A frog that croaks during the day, is a sign that rain was on its way".
Apparently, you can cure a wart by rubbing it with a frog.
If a frog enters your home then it is a sign of good luck.
If you kill a frog you are killing the soul of a deceased child.
